GERMANY - LATE 1970'S
MORE AREA PHOTOS

Ever since I've put all the McNair Kaserne stuff on my web site, I've received literally hundreds of old photos. Each photo takes at least 15 minutes to catalog, file, describe, and code into a web page. This is going to take me forever. I just have one thing to ask of you:
Keep them coming!

This was taken Feb. 1966 and I had sent it to a CMS Perrault about 4 years ago and he put it up on the 32nd web site under history of Btn. Of course it is no longer available as the unit is gone!

Frankfurt's famous opera house, located on Opernplatz, was built in 1880 by the architect Richard Lucae. It was one of the major opera houses of Germany, until it was destroyed in World War II. It was not until 1981 that the old opera was fully rebuilt and reopened. Today it functions as a concert hall, while operas are performed in the Oper Frankfurt. The inscription on the frieze of the Old Opera says: "Dem Wahren, Schönen, Guten" ("To the true, the beautiful, the good")..

The Europaturm ("Tower of Europe") is a 337.5 meter high telecommunications tower in Frankfurt am Main in Germany. Habitants call it "Ginnemer Spaschel" (dialect of Hese for "Asparagus of Ginnheim" and accurately related to as "Ginnheimer Spargel" in High German), because it's part of Ginnheim, a district of the City. Or simply "Fernsehturm" ("Television Tower") for it was the first broadcast tower in Frankfurt. (D.H.)

(The) street name is Ginnheimer Stadtweg. The tower is also named Europa Fernsehturm (across I.G.farben building). (H.M.)

It's amazing what a couple of guys can do with a couple of hours in Google Maps and Google Earth!)

Photos taken in downtown Frankfurt. The street is called "Große Bockenheimer Straße" (the locals call it also "Fressgass"). The fountain you see on the left 2 photos was put up in the year 1977. The sculpture on the right was put up in 1972.  The fountain and sculpture are still there. The buildings you see on the right photo are all gone but I remember seeing them when I was a kid.

(The left photo is) the Europa-Turm with the fields of a market garden in Frankfurt-Bockenheim in front of it.

(The right photo) is a spot only a few meters away (from the previous photo). The tall building on the right is a university dorm in Bockenheim and the bridge on which the photographer has stood connects Bockenheim with Ginnheimis and leads over the A66-Autobahn. My ex-girlfriend has lived in the dorm. Its street address is Ginnheimer Landstraße 42 I think.

Info by Brian Klein.
  Checkpoint Uli
1983:
"Checkpoint Uli". This trinkhalle was (is?) located on the south-east side of the Kaserne. G.Is would lower money in a bucket on a rope. Uli would, in turn, load up the bucket with beer for the G.Is to lift up and consume. Not exactly your conventional business model but it does get the job done.
